Ceramics Mentorship Program: Fall 2021- High School Grades 9-11

First City Art Center is proud to offer FREE comprehensive ceramics instruction to six high school students 9th – 11th grade in Escambia and Santa Rosa County.

This is a condensed ceramics course that covers hand building and wheel throwing techniques. Participants will meet each week on Friday and Saturday evenings from 5pm-8pm, starting on Friday November 5th through November 20th, 2021.

Student requirements:

Submission of completed Mentorship Application (attached) and a Recommendation Letter, must be received no later than October 22nd, 2021.

Attend each scheduled class, arrive promptly on time, and work in the studio for the full 3 hr. class time

Expectations for the course will discussed during the 1st class on Fri. Nov. 5th.

If a student is unable to attend, we will expect some notification beforehand (call, email).

Students will be responsible for obtaining their own transportation to and from First City Art Center.

Students will be expected to participate in studio set-up and clean-up.

This 3-week course is designed to be an intensive immersion in clay, therefore we ask that students limit use of cell phones during class.

Students should bring water and a snack (if needed) for each session.  

Each student and parent will be required to sign a waiver agreement form. 

Students will be required to wear face coverings at all times while indoors. Disposable masks are available on campus.

This 3-week class is being provided free of charge, and is funded by members of the First City Art Center Pottery Guild. The approximate value for each student is over $200 and this is why we carefully screen for the truly motivated students who will benefit most from the experience.  Students will be provided with all tools and clay during the program, and will be instructed by Pearl Van Hoove and Emalee Hudson.

Selection Process:

Each interested student must complete the short application detailing their current interest in art and why they are interested in pursuing this opportunity.  Each student application must also include a written recommendation by a high school teacher, or other adult such as volunteer group leader, or coach.​ If you have any questions about recommendation letters, please email Vista@firstcityart.org​. Selection is at the sole discretion of the review committee at First City Art Center.
