Intro to Sewing ~ Pins and Needles  

In this 6 week class students will learn how to use a sewing machine, read a pattern, and create a simple article of clothing. You will also learn to identify the sewing machine parts, use an iron, and think about exploring designing in order to make your own clothing.

Pins & Needles classes can help you learn a variety of sewing techniques from basic to advanced.

Students will learn how to:

  • Thread a sewing machine.
  • Read the back of a pattern.
  • Measure to determine sizes
  • ​Lay out a pattern on fabric.
  • Read and interpret the instructions of a pattern.

 

The projects offered are: a tote bag and shorts or skirt

 

Class Breakdown

Week 1: Introduction to the sewing machine segment and basic stitches along with a completed project that makes students feel proud and accomplished

  • Get to know the ins and outs out your sewing machine
  • Sewing on note book paper (lines)
  • Learning the different stitch patterns (straight line, zigzag, overlock, etc.) 
  • Learn about different types of fabrics (cotton, polyester, silks, etc.)

Week 2 & 3:  Sewing Project – Tote Bags

  • How to cut fabric
  • Sewing from a template
  • Reading a template
  • Pinning your fabric

Week 4, 5, & 6:  Sewing Project – PJ Pants, or skirt/shorts with elastic waist

  • Build upon the skills learned in weeks 2 and 3
  • Sewing from a purchased pattern
  • Reading pattern instructions
  • Inserting elastic

 

Materials:

You will be provided with a sewing machine by the instructor for this class

Fabric needs will be discussed in the first class.

You will also need the following:

  • Quilting / Sewing ruler – 6 x 24inches

Notes

  • Sewing Machines are provided and basic supplies are provided.

Cancellation Policy

Students will receive a refund of tuition minus 10% if the student contacts us no later than 7 days prior to the first day of class. Cancellations up to 48 hours before the start of the class will receive a 50% refund. Any cancellations within 48 hours before the start of the class, or after the class has begun will not be refunded. In the case of an emergency, the student may be able to transfer their payment towards another class based on availability.

If you need to move your enrollment to another session you must contact us at least 7 days prior to the start of the class. You cannot move enrollment forward after a class has already begun.

Class sizes are limited and enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. Unfortunately, FCAC is unable to prorate students for missed classes or classes that they are unable to attend.
